Management of respiratory depression in post-operative patients, drug-induced respiratory depression, acute respiratory insufficiency associated with COPD exacerbations, and as an aid in weaning from mechanical ventilation.

Acts as a selective respiratory stimulant by exciting chemoreceptors in the carotid body, which triggers increased breathing rate and depth through direct stimulation of the respiratory center in the brainstem.

Must be administered in a monitored hospital setting due to risk of seizures, arrhythmias, and elevated blood pressure. Contraindicated in severe hypertension, coronary artery disease, and epilepsy. Should not be used as a substitute for mechanical ventilation in severe respiratory failure.
