Duaklir is indicated for the long-term maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction in patients with COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It is not indicated for acute bronchospasm relief or for use in patients with asthma.
Duaklir contains two bronchodilators with different mechanisms of action. Aclidinium is a long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA) that blocks acetylcholine from causing airway constriction, while formoterol is a long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA) that relaxes smooth muscles in the airways. Together, they provide improved bronchodilation compared to either component alone.
Duaklir is for maintenance therapy only and should not be used to treat sudden breathing problems. Patients should inform their doctor about heart conditions, seizures, thyroid problems, or glaucoma before starting treatment. Common side effects may include cough, headache, and upper respiratory tract infections. As with other LABAs, there is an increased risk of asthma-related death when used alone for asthma; Duaklir is not approved for asthma treatment.
