Econazole Nitrate is used to treat dermatophyte infections such as tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea cruris (jock itch), tinea corporis (ringworm), and cutaneous candidiasis. It is also effective against pityriasis versicolor (tinea versicolor) and certain yeast infections.
Econazole works by inhibiting the enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase, which is essential for synthesizing ergosterol, a critical component of the fungal cell membrane. This disruption weakens the cell membrane, preventing fungal growth and replication.
Econazole is for topical use only and should not be applied to the eyes or mucous membranes. Patients should wash their hands before and after application. Continue treatment for the full prescribed duration even if symptoms improve. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult their healthcare provider before use.
