Prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in adults with non-valvular atrial fibrillation, treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), and prevention of recurrent DVT and PE.

Edoxaban is a direct, selective inhibitor of Factor Xa (FXa). It does not require antithrombin III for its anticoagulant activity. By inhibiting free FXa and prothrombinase activity, it reduces thrombin generation and subsequently inhibits thrombin-induced platelet aggregation, preventing clot formation.

Like all anticoagulants, edoxaban carries a significant risk of bleeding and should not be used in patients with active pathological bleeding. It is not recommended for patients with mechanical heart valves or moderate-to-severe mitral stenosis. Dosage may require adjustment based on renal function, body weight, and concomitant medications. Patients should not discontinue edoxaban abruptly without medical consultation as this can increase the risk of thrombotic events.
