Effient is indicated to reduce the risk of thrombotic cardiovascular events (such as heart attacks and strokes) in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), including those with unstable angina, non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), and ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) who are undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with stent placement.
Effient contains the active ingredient prasugrel, which is a P2Y12 platelet ADP receptor antagonist. It works by irreversibly blocking the P2Y12 receptor on the surface of platelets, preventing ADP from binding and triggering platelet activation and aggregation.
Effient carries a significant risk of bleeding and should not be used in patients with a history of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). It is typically used in combination with aspirin and should be discontinued at least 7 days prior to planned surgery. This medication should only be prescribed by healthcare providers experienced in managing acute coronary syndromes.
