Elmiron is prescribed for the treatment of interstitial cystitis (IC)/painful bladder syndrome, a chronic condition characterized by bladder pressure, bladder pain, pelvic discomfort, and urinary frequency or urgency.

The exact mechanism is not fully understood, but Elmiron is believed to work by adhering to and protecting the bladder lining (urothelium), potentially replenishing deficient glycosaminoglycans that help shield the bladder wall from irritating substances in the urine.

Elmiron has mild anticoagulant (blood-thinning) properties and may increase bleeding risk, especially when combined with other anticoagulants or before surgery. Long-term use has been associated with potential eye problems, including pigmentary maculopathy, so regular ophthalmologic monitoring is recommended. Common side effects include hair loss, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain. This is a brand-name medication with no generic equivalent available.
