Eltrombopag

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: July 26, 2026

Eltrombopag is a thrombopoietin (TPO) receptor agonist that stimulates platelet production by promoting the growth and maturation of megakaryocytes, the bone marrow cells responsible for creating platelets. It is primarily used to treat conditions associated with low platelet counts, such as chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), severe aplastic anemia, and thrombocytopenia in patients with chronic hepatitis C.

Eltrombopag is used to treat chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in patients who have not responded adequately to other treatments, severe aplastic anemia, and thrombocytopenia associated with chronic hepatitis C infection.

Eltrombopag binds to the transmembrane domain of the human TPO receptor (cMpl), triggering signaling cascades that stimulate megakaryocyte proliferation and differentiation, ultimately leading to increased platelet production.

Eltrombopag should be taken on an empty stomach at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after foods, supplements, or antacids containing polyvalent cations. Regular blood monitoring is required due to risks of liver problems, bone marrow changes, and potential increased risk of blood clots. Treatment should be avoided in patients with known risk factors for thrombosis.
