Empagliflozin (Jardiance): A Patient-Friendly Guide

Published: July 22, 2026Updated: July 22, 2026

Empagliflozin, also known by the brand name Jardiance, is a prescription medicine in the SGLT2 inhibitor class. It lowers blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes and may help reduce the risk of certain heart and kidney complications in selected people with type 2 diabetes.

Quick summary

Empagliflozin is usually taken once daily and can help lower blood sugar, but it is not insulin and is not used to treat type 1 diabetes. Because it can cause serious, uncommon side effects, follow your prescription instructions and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it is right for you.
