Endocet is indicated for the relief of moderate to severe pain, typically when other non-opioid pain medications have not provided adequate relief. It may be used for acute pain following surgery or injury, or for chronic pain conditions requiring around-the-clock opioid therapy.
Endocet combines two pain-relieving agents: oxycodone binds to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord to alter pain perception, while acetaminophen inhibits prostaglandin synthesis in the central nervous system. The combination provides synergistic pain relief compared to either component alone.
Endocet carries significant risks including dependence, addiction, and respiratory depression. It should not be combined with alcohol, benzodiazepines, or other CNS depressants. Acetaminophen component poses hepatotoxicity risk at high doses. Use is contraindicated in patients with severe respiratory depression, acute asthma, or known hypersensitivity to components. This is a Schedule II controlled substance with strict prescribing regulations.
