Enoxaparin: Patient Guide

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: July 26, 2026

Enoxaparin is a prescription anticoagulant, or blood thinner, that is given by injection. It is used to prevent or treat blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, and in some people with unstable angina or certain heart attacks.

Quick summary

Enoxaparin lowers the risk of blood clots, but it can also cause serious bleeding. Take it only as prescribed and check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining it with other medicines.

Overdose information

Important overdose information
Toxic dose: Single dose significantly exceeding therapeutic range that may cause serious bleeding complications
Chronic overdose: Prolonged elevated anti-Xa levels leading to increased bleeding risk with cumulative dosing above recommended
Immediate actions
Discontinue enoxaparin, monitor vital signs and coagulation parameters, consider protamine sulfate administration
Antidote
Protamine sulfate(Partially effective - neutralizes approximately 60-80% of enoxaparin's anticoagulant effect)
