Primary treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), including in patients with NYHA Class III-IV symptoms. May also be used for other forms of pulmonary hypertension and in certain cardiac conditions.

Acts as a prostacyclin (PGI2) analog that directly dilates pulmonary and systemic arterial vascular beds, reducing pulmonary vascular resistance and blood pressure. Also inhibits platelet aggregation by increasing cAMP in platelets, preventing thrombus formation.

Administered via continuous IV infusion using a specialized pump due to very short half-life (approximately 3-5 minutes). Requires careful dose titration under medical supervision. Common side effects include flushing, headache, hypotension, jaw pain, and nausea. Abrupt discontinuation should be avoided as it may cause worsening of pulmonary hypertension. Patients require training on pump operation and infusion site care.
