Adjunctive treatment of focal (partial) seizures in adults with epilepsy. It is typically used when other antiepileptic medications alone have not provided adequate seizure control.

Eslicarbazepine acetate is converted to eslicarbazepine, its active metabolite. It is thought to work by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels, which stabilizes neuronal membranes and prevents the repetitive firing of neurons that leads to seizure activity.

May cause dizziness, drowsiness, and coordination problems. Can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts. Requires regular monitoring of sodium levels as it may cause hyponatremia. Should not be discontinued abruptly. May interact with other antiepileptic drugs and hormonal contraceptives.
