Eszopiclone is indicated for the treatment of insomnia, specifically difficulty falling asleep and/or difficulty maintaining sleep throughout the night.
Eszopiclone acts on GABA-A receptor complexes, binding at sites allosterically coupled to benzodiazepine receptors. This interaction enhances inhibitory GABAergic signaling, resulting in sedation and sleep induction.
Should be taken immediately before bedtime. May cause next-day drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired coordination. Has potential for dependence and should be used for short duration. Avoid alcohol and operating machinery until effects are known. Not recommended for use in patients with a history of substance abuse.
