Treatment of tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains that are resistant to first-line medications. Primarily used for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) as part of combination therapy regimens.

Acts as a prodrug that inhibits mycolic acid synthesis, a critical component of the mycobacterial cell wall. By disrupting cell wall formation, it prevents bacterial replication and growth.

Must always be used in combination with other antituberculosis medications to prevent resistance. Associated with hepatotoxicity, gastrointestinal disturbances, and potential neurological or psychiatric side effects. Requires liver function monitoring during treatment. Not suitable as monotherapy.
