Etripamil is used for the acute treatment of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT), including episodes associated with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. It is intended for patients who experience intermittent SVT episodes requiring rapid intervention.
Etripamil inhibits L-type calcium channels (slow calcium channels) in cardiac atrioventricular nodal cells and arterial smooth muscle. By blocking calcium influx, it slows conduction through the AV node and causes vasodilation, which helps terminate reentrant arrhythmias and restore normal sinus rhythm.
Etripamil is administered as a nasal spray for self-use during an acute SVT episode. Common side effects may include nasal discomfort, congestion, and transient hypotension. It should not be used in patients with severe hypotension, uncontrolled heart failure, or certain pre-excitation syndromes. Medical evaluation may be needed if the episode does not resolve or symptoms worsen.
