Evotaz is indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in treatment-naive or treatment-experienced adults without prior resistance to atazanavir. It must be used in combination with other antiretroviral agents.
Evotaz combines atazanavir, a protease inhibitor that blocks an enzyme HIV needs to replicate, with cobicistat, a booster that increases blood levels of atazanavir by inhibiting its breakdown, allowing for more effective viral suppression.
Evotaz does not cure HIV/AIDS and must be taken consistently as prescribed. Common side effects may include jaundice, nausea, and rash. Patients should be monitored for liver problems and drug interactions. It should not be used in patients with severe hepatic impairment.
