Excede is indicated for the treatment of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) associated with Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni in cattle, as well as swine respiratory disease associated with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, and Streptococcus suis. It is also approved for bovine foot rot (interdigital phlegmon) in cattle.
Excede contains ceftiofur hydrochloride, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death. The extended-release formulation allows for prolonged drug levels with a single subcutaneous injection.
Excede is for veterinary use only in cattle and swine. As a cephalosporin, there may be potential cross-reactivity in animals with known hypersensitivity to penicillins or other beta-lactams. Following labeled dosage and withdrawal times is essential for food-producing animals. A prescription from a licensed veterinarian is required.
