Extraneal is indicated for use in patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing peritoneal dialysis. It is particularly useful for patients who require adequate ultrafiltration during long dwell periods (8-16 hours).
Extraneal contains icodextrin, a glucose polymer that acts as an osmotic agent. It draws fluid and solutes from the blood through the peritoneal membrane into the dialysis solution by virtue of its colloidal osmotic pressure, facilitating removal of waste products and excess water.
Extraneal is for intraperitoneal use only. It should be used with caution in patients with conditions affecting the peritoneal membrane. Blood glucose monitoring may be affected during use due to interference with certain glucose measurement methods. Patients should be monitored for signs of dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and peritonitis.
