Exubera was indicated for the treatment of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus in adult patients. It was used to improve glycemic control in patients who required insulin therapy.

Exubera delivered recombinant human insulin in powdered form for inhalation. Once absorbed through the lungs into the bloodstream, insulin worked by binding to insulin receptors and facilitating cellular uptake of glucose, thereby lowering blood sugar levels.

Exubera required regular pulmonary function testing before and during treatment due to potential effects on lung function. It was not recommended for patients with certain respiratory conditions such as asthma or COPD. The medication was discontinued by the manufacturer in 2007 and is no longer available.
