Fanapt is FDA-approved for the acute treatment of schizophrenia in adults. It may help reduce positive symptoms (hallucinations, delusions) and negative symptoms (flat emotions, social withdrawal) associated with this condition.

Fanapt is an atypical antipsychotic that works by modulating dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptor activity. This combination of dopamine and serotonin receptor antagonism is thought to help reduce psychotic symptoms.

Fanapt may cause side effects including drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and weight gain. It may increase blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Like other antipsychotics, it carries a boxed warning about increased mortality in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis. It is not approved for use in children.
