Femhrt is primarily used to treat symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and mood changes. It is also prescribed to help prevent osteoporosis (bone thinning) in postmenopausal women who are at significant risk and cannot take other medications.
Femhrt contains ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and norethindrone (a progestin). The estrogen component helps replenish declining hormone levels to relieve menopausal symptoms, while the progestin component protects the uterine lining from overgrowth, reducing the risk of endometrial cancer that estrogen alone could cause.
Hormone replacement therapy may increase the risk of certain serious conditions including blood clots, stroke, heart disease, and breast cancer. It should not be used by women who are pregnant, have unexplained vaginal bleeding, or have a history of certain cancers, liver disease, or clotting disorders. Treatment should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration consistent with treatment goals.
