Fenbufen was indicated for the symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and acute musculoskeletal disorders such as sprains and strains. It was also used for pain management associated with these conditions.

Like other NSAIDs, fenbufen works by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, particularly COX-1 and COX-2, which are responsible for producing prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are inflammatory mediators that contribute to pain, swelling, and fever. By blocking their production, fenbufen reduces inflammation and associated symptoms.

Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea and dyspepsia. As with other NSAIDs, it may increase cardiovascular risk and can cause kidney or liver impairment with prolonged use. Fenbufen has been withdrawn from some markets due to reports of severe liver toxicity. Patients should use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration and avoid in patients with active peptic ulcer disease or severe renal impairment.
