Treats hypertriglyceridemia, mixed dyslipidemia, and hypercholesterolemia when lifestyle modifications alone are insufficient. Commonly used in patients at risk of pancreatitis from very high triglyceride levels or cardiovascular disease from abnormal lipid profiles.
The active metabolite fenofibric acid activates peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα), which increases lipolysis and elimination of triglyceride-rich particles from plasma. This reduces triglyceride levels, modestly lowers LDL cholesterol, and raises HDL cholesterol.
Take with food to enhance absorption. Regular monitoring of liver function and lipids is required during treatment. May cause muscle pain or weakness, especially when combined with statins. Contraindicated in patients with severe liver, kidney, or gallbladder disease. Avoid alcohol during treatment.
