Treatment of iron deficiency anemia in adult patients with chronic kidney disease who require rapid iron repletion or cannot tolerate oral iron supplements.

Feraheme contains ferumoxytol, a superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle that releases iron into the bloodstream. The iron is then bound by transferrin and incorporated into hemoglobin, restoring oxygen-carrying capacity in red blood cells.

Administered as two IV injections given 3-8 days apart by a healthcare provider. Carries a boxed warning for serious hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis; should only be administered in settings where resuscitation equipment is available. Common side effects include headache, hypotension, dizziness, and nausea. Not for patients with iron overload disorders or known sensitivities to iron products.
