Published: July 26, 2026Updated: July 26, 2026

Ferric derisomaltose is an intravenous iron replacement medication used to treat iron deficiency anemia when oral iron supplements are inadequate or poorly tolerated. It delivers iron directly to the bloodstream, where it binds to transferrin and is transported to bone marrow for incorporation into hemoglobin, effectively replenishing depleted iron stores.

Treatment of iron deficiency anemia in adults, particularly when oral iron therapy is ineffective, not tolerated, or when rapid iron replenishment is required. Common scenarios include chronic kidney disease, inflammatory conditions affecting iron absorption, and significant blood loss.

Ferric derisomaltose consists of iron (III) hydroxide complexed with derisomaltose, an iron carbohydrate oligosaccharide. After intravenous administration, the complex releases iron, which binds to transferrin for transport through the bloodstream to bone marrow erythroid precursor cells, where it is incorporated into hemoglobin.

Administered as a single or divided intravenous infusion. Dosing is calculated based on patient weight and iron deficit. Monitor for hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis, particularly during or shortly after infusion. May cause transient skin discoloration at injection site. Not for use in conditions where iron utilization is impaired.
