Flumadine (rimantadine) is an antiviral medication historically used for the treatment and prevention of influenza A virus infections. It belongs to the adamantane class of antivirals and works by inhibiting viral replication. Due to widespread resistance among circulating influenza strains, its clinical use has become limited, and it is not currently recommended as a first-line treatment option.

Flumadine was used for treatment and prevention of influenza A infections in adults and children. It was indicated for both acute treatment of established illness and prophylaxis following exposure. Current clinical guidelines do not recommend adamantanes due to high resistance rates.

Flumadine is an antiviral agent that interferes with the uncoating of influenza A virus by blocking the M2 ion channel. This prevents viral replication early in the infection cycle.

Many circulating influenza A strains are now resistant to rimantadine and amantadine, limiting clinical usefulness. Resistance can develop during treatment. Common side effects may include gastrointestinal symptoms, insomnia, and dizziness. Not effective against influenza B. Patients should consult current CDC guidance for preferred antiviral options.
