Fluoroplex is used to treat multiple actinic keratoses (also called solar keratoses) on the face and scalp, as well as superficial basal cell carcinoma in areas where other treatments may not be appropriate. It targets rapidly dividing and abnormal skin cells while having less effect on normal cells.
As an antimetabolite, fluorouracil interferes with DNA and RNA synthesis in cells. It inhibits thymidylate synthetase, an enzyme essential for DNA replication. This effect is most pronounced in rapidly dividing and abnormal cells, causing them to die off during treatment.
Fluoroplex causes significant skin reactions during treatment including redness, swelling, and ulceration of treated areas. Sun exposure should be avoided during treatment as it increases side effects. The medication is contraindicated in pregnancy and should not be used by breastfeeding mothers. Patients with dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) deficiency may experience severe adverse effects. Treatment areas should be protected during healing, and the medication should only be applied as directed by a healthcare provider.
