Flurbiprofen is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and mild to moderate pain including menstrual cramps and postoperative pain. Topical formulations may be used for oral mucosal inflammation.
Flurbiprofen works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, which reduces the production of prostaglandins—chemicals involved in inflammation, pain, and fever. This results in decreased inflammation and pain relief.
Like all NSAIDs, flurbiprofen carries risks of gastrointestinal bleeding, kidney problems, and increased cardiovascular events. It should be avoided during late pregnancy and used with caution in patients with asthma, ulcers, or heart disease. Alcohol should be avoided while taking this medication.
