Flutemetamol F-18

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: August 28, 2026

Flutemetamol F-18 is a radioactive diagnostic agent used in positron emission tomography (PET) brain imaging to detect beta-amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease. It is indicated for adult patients experiencing cognitive decline to help differentiate Alzheimer's disease from other neurodegenerative causes of dementia.

Quick summary

Flutemetamol F-18 is a PET imaging tracer used to visualize brain amyloid plaques in patients with cognitive impairment to aid in Alzheimer's disease diagnosis.

Used to image beta-amyloid plaques in the brain of adult patients with cognitive impairment being evaluated for Alzheimer's disease or other causes of dementia. It provides visual evidence of amyloid pathology to support clinical assessment.

Following intravenous administration, Flutemetamol F-18 crosses the blood-brain barrier and binds to beta-amyloid plaques. The radioactive F-18 isotope emits positrons that are detected by PET scanning, allowing visualization and quantification of amyloid plaque density in brain tissue.

This is a diagnostic imaging agent only, not a therapeutic medication. The radiation exposure is low but cumulative with other imaging. It should be used by trained healthcare professionals in facilities equipped for radiopharmaceutical handling. A positive scan indicates amyloid presence but does not independently diagnose Alzheimer's disease and must be interpreted alongside clinical evaluation. Safety in pregnancy should be considered due to radiation exposure.
