Fortaz treats respiratory tract infections (including pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, intra-abdominal infections, meningitis, septicemia, and infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other susceptible bacteria.
As a third-generation cephalosporin, Fortaz inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), ultimately leading to bacterial cell death. It is more resistant to beta-lactamases than earlier generations, particularly effective against gram-negative organisms.
Fortaz is administered intravenously or intramuscularly by a healthcare professional. It may cause allergic reactions, especially in patients with penicillin or cephalosporin sensitivity. Common side effects include diarrhea, rash, and injection site reactions. Dosage must be adjusted in patients with kidney impairment. Inform your doctor of any allergies, kidney problems, or other medications before treatment.
