Treatment of HIV-1 infection in combination with other antiretroviral agents, approved for use in adults and children (typically ages 4 weeks and older). It is used as part of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART).

Fosamprenavir is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed to amprenavir, which competitively inhibits the HIV-1 protease enzyme. This prevents the cleavage of viral polyprotein precursors (gag and gag-pol), resulting in non-infectious immature viral particles that cannot replicate.

Should be used only as part of combination antiretroviral therapy. Contraindicated with certain drugs metabolized by CYP450 enzymes. May cause significant drug interactions and adverse effects including rash, GI symptoms, and metabolic changes. Requires dose adjustment in hepatic impairment.
