Fosinopril

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: July 26, 2026

Fosinopril is an ACE inhibitor used to treat hypertension, heart failure, and to improve survival after heart attacks. It works by blocking the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a substance that causes blood vessels to constrict. This leads to relaxed blood vessels and lower blood pressure.

Quick summary

Fosinopril is an ACE inhibitor that lowers blood pressure by preventing the formation of angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor.

Fosinopril is indicated for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) and heart failure. It may also be used to improve survival in patients who have had a heart attack and to slow the progression of kidney disease in diabetic patients.

Fosinopril is a prodrug that is converted in the body to fosinoprilat, which competitively inhibits angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). By blocking ACE, the drug prevents the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, reducing vasoconstriction and lowering blood pressure.

Common side effects include dizziness, headache, and dry cough. Fosinopril should not be used during pregnancy as it may harm the unborn baby. Patients with a history of angioedema or those taking aliskiren should avoid this medication. Blood pressure and kidney function should be monitored during treatment.
