Fosrenol

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: July 26, 2026

Fosrenol (lanthanum carbonate) is a phosphate-binding medication used to control elevated phosphorus levels in the blood of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or chronic kidney disease (CKD) who require dialysis. It works by binding to dietary phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, forming insoluble complexes that are excreted in the stool, thereby reducing phosphate absorption.

Quick summary

Fosrenol is a phosphate binder that helps lower high phosphorus levels in patients with kidney disease requiring dialysis.

Fosrenol is indicated for the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are on dialysis. It is used to manage phosphorus levels when dietary phosphate restriction alone is insufficient.

Fosrenol contains lanthanum, a trivalent cation that binds to dietary phosphate in the GI tract. This forms insoluble lanthanum phosphate complexes that cannot be absorbed through the intestinal wall. The bound phosphate is then eliminated with feces, effectively reducing serum phosphorus levels.

Fosrenol tablets are chewable and should be taken with or immediately following meals for optimal efficacy. Common side effects may include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Patients should inform their healthcare provider of all medications, as Fosrenol may reduce absorption of other drugs. Regular monitoring of serum phosphorus levels is recommended during treatment.
