Fycompa is FDA-approved as adjunctive (add-on) treatment for partial-onset seizures with or without secondarily generalized seizures in patients 4 years and older, and as adjunctive treatment for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in patients 12 years and older.
Fycompa works by selectively blocking AMPA receptors, a type of glutamate receptor in the brain. By reducing the activity of glutamate—the brain's primary excitatory neurotransmitter—it helps decrease neuronal excitability and seizure activity.
Fycompa may cause dizziness, drowsiness, balance problems, and fatigue. It carries a boxed warning for serious psychiatric and behavioral reactions including aggression, hostility, and in rare cases, homicidal ideation. Patients should be monitored for these effects and should not stop taking this medication abruptly. Alcohol should be avoided as it can worsen side effects.
