Published: July 26, 2026Updated: July 26, 2026

Gamifant (emapalumab) is a monoclonal antibody medication that targets and neutralizes interferon gamma (IFN-γ), a key inflammatory cytokine. It is specifically indicated for the treatment of primary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) in adult and pediatric patients, including newborns, when conventional HLH therapy is inadequate or not tolerated.

Quick summary

Gamifant is an immunotherapy used to treat primary HLH by blocking interferon gamma, a major driver of the overactive immune response in this rare condition.

Treatment of primary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare and potentially fatal hyperinflammatory disorder, in adult and pediatric patients (including newborns) when standard HLH therapies are insufficient or not tolerated.

Gamifant is a monoclonal antibody that binds to and neutralizes interferon gamma (IFN-γ), a cytokine that plays a central role in driving the excessive inflammatory response seen in HLH. By blocking IFN-γ activity, it helps reduce the hyperinflammatory state characteristic of the disease.

Administered as an intravenous infusion, typically every 3-4 days. Due to increased infection risk during treatment, prophylactic antibiotics for Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia and antiviral prophylaxis are recommended. Patients should be monitored closely for signs of infections. May cause infusion-related reactions.
