Gardasil is used to prevent infections from HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18, which are associated with cervical cancer, anal cancer, vulvar cancer, vaginal cancer, and genital warts. It is approved for use in individuals ages 9-26, with routine vaccination recommended at ages 11-12.
Gardasil is a recombinant vaccine that contains virus-like particles (VLPs) derived from the outer protein coat of HPV. These VLPs stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies against HPV without containing live virus, providing protection against future infection by the targeted HPV types.
Gardasil is administered as a three-dose series over six months. It does not treat existing HPV infections or cervical cancer and does not replace regular cervical screening (Pap smears). Common side effects include injection site pain, swelling, and redness. Serious allergic reactions are rare. The vaccine is contraindicated for individuals with severe yeast allergies or who have had previous allergic reactions to the vaccine.
