Gaviscon is primarily used to treat occasional heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach, and symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It may also help relieve bloating and pressure associated with acid reflux.
Gaviscon contains alginic acid (derived from seaweed) combined with antacids. When the alginic acid contacts stomach acid, it forms a foamy gel that floats on top of the stomach contents, creating a physical barrier that prevents acid from rising into the esophagus. The antacid components simultaneously neutralize existing stomach acid for quick symptom relief.
Gaviscon is generally well-tolerated but may interact with other medications by affecting their absorption. It should not be used as a substitute for medical care if symptoms persist beyond two weeks or are severe. Patients with kidney disease, heart failure, or on sodium-restricted diets should consult a healthcare provider before use, as some formulations contain significant amounts of sodium or aluminum.
