Gemfibrozil
Gemfibrozil is a fibrate-class medication used to treat abnormal lipid levels, particularly high triglycerides and mixed dyslipidemia. It works by activating PPAR-alpha receptors, which increases fat breakdown and reduces the liver's production of very-low-density lipoproteins.
Gemfibrozil is a lipid-lowering agent used to reduce high triglyceride levels and manage abnormal cholesterol in patients at risk of cardiovascular disease.

Gemfibrozil is primarily indicated for hypertriglyceridemia (high triglycerides) and mixed dyslipidemia in patients with inadequate response to diet and exercise. It is often considered when triglyceride levels are significantly elevated to reduce the risk of pancreatitis.
Gemfibrozil activates peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-α), a nuclear receptor that regulates lipid metabolism. This increases lipoprotein lipase activity, enhances fatty acid oxidation, and reduces hepatic VLDL production, resulting in lowered triglycerides and modestly increased HDL cholesterol.
Gemfibrozil is contraindicated in patients with hepatic or severe renal impairment, gallbladder disease, and should not be used with statin medications due to increased myopathy risk. Common side effects include gastrointestinal symptoms, and periodic monitoring of liver function and lipid panels is recommended. It may enhance the effects of anticoagulants like warfarin.
