Glibenclamide (Glyburide) for Type 2 Diabetes

Published: July 22, 2026Updated: July 22, 2026

Glibenclamide, also called glyburide, is a sulfonylurea medicine that lowers blood sugar by helping the body release more insulin. It is used to treat type 2 diabetes when diet, exercise, and other medicines do not provide enough control. It is not insulin and is not used to treat diabetic ketoacidosis.

Quick summary

Glibenclamide can help control blood sugar, but it may cause hypoglycemia, especially if you skip meals, drink alcohol, or take other diabetes medicines. Take it exactly as prescribed and ask your doctor or pharmacist how to reduce this risk.

Overdose information

Important overdose information
Toxic dose: Single dose that may cause serious toxicity, typically doses above 100mg can lead to severe hypoglycemia in adults
Chronic overdose: Prolonged use at supratherapeutic doses can lead to cumulative hypoglycemic episodes and increased risk of cardiovascular events
Immediate actions
Administer intravenous dextrose (50% glucose), monitor blood glucose continuously, consider gastric lavage within 1-2 hours of ingestion if large dose
Antidote
Dextrose (intravenous glucose)(Highly effective for correcting hypoglycemia, but must be continued due to long half-life of glibenclamide)
