Glumetza is indicated for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults when diet and exercise alone do not provide adequate blood sugar control. It may be used as monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetic agents as directed by a healthcare provider.

As a biguanide, Glumetza works primarily by decreasing hepatic (liver) glucose production and improving the body's sensitivity to insulin. The extended-release formulation allows the medication to be released gradually over time, providing sustained blood sugar control throughout the day.

Glumetza should be taken with food to reduce gastrointestinal side effects. It is contraindicated in patients with severe kidney impairment. Common side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. Regular monitoring of kidney function and blood sugar levels is recommended during treatment. This medication should be discontinued prior to or during procedures involving iodinated contrast dye.
