Gonal F is primarily used for ovulation induction in anovulatory or oligo-ovulatory women, and is a key component of controlled ovarian hyperstimulation in assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). In men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, it is used to promote spermatogenesis when used in combination with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).

Gonal F contains recombinant FSH that binds to FSH receptors on granulosa cells in the ovaries, stimulating follicular development and estrogen production. In men, it supports Sertoli cells in the testes to promote sperm production when combined with hCG therapy.

Gonal F is administered by subcutaneous injection and requires careful monitoring by a fertility specialist. Use is contraindicated in pregnancy, uncontrolled thyroid or adrenal dysfunction, and hormone-sensitive tumors. Multiple pregnancies and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) are known risks requiring medical supervision.
