Gynol II is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy. It is a topical vaginal contraceptive intended for use by women of childbearing age. It may be used alone or in combination with barrier methods such as condoms or diaphragms for additional protection.

Gynol II contains nonoxynol-9, a surfactant-type spermicide that works by disrupting the cell membrane of sperm, causing them to become immobilized and unable to fertilize an egg. The product is placed deep in the vagina prior to intercourse to coat the cervical area.

Gynol II is less effective when used alone compared to hormonal or intrauterine contraceptives. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Frequent use may cause vaginal or penile irritation and may increase the risk of urinary tract infections. For maximum effectiveness, it should be applied no more than one hour before intercourse and reapplied with each act of intercourse. Users should read all labeling carefully and consult a healthcare provider with any questions.
