Haemophilus Influenzae B Vaccine

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: August 30, 2026

This is a conjugate vaccine that protects against Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) bacteria, which can cause serious invasive infections including meningitis, pneumonia, epiglottitis, and sepsis. It is primarily used in infants and young children as part of routine childhood immunization schedules, with the protein conjugation enhancing immune response in young children who don't respond well to polysaccharide-only vaccines.

Quick summary

A conjugate vaccine for children that protects against serious Hib infections like meningitis by linking bacterial polysaccharides to a protein carrier to boost immunity.

Prevention of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) invasive diseases including meningitis, pneumonia, bacteremia, epiglottitis, and other serious infections in infants and young children. Typically administered as part of routine childhood vaccination schedules starting at 2-6 months of age.

The vaccine contains capsular polysaccharides from Hib bacteria conjugated (chemically linked) to a meningococcal protein carrier. This conjugation converts the T-cell independent polysaccharide antigen into a T-cell dependent antigen, enabling a stronger and more durable immune response, particularly in young children whose immune systems cannot effectively respond to polysaccharide antigens alone.

Contraindicated in individuals with severe allergic reactions to any vaccine component. May cause mild side effects such as redness, swelling at injection site, or fever. Not a substitute for meningococcal vaccines as it only protects against Hib, not Neisseria meningitidis. Complete the full vaccination series for optimal protection.
