Hizentra is indicated for replacement therapy in primary immunodeficiency, including conditions such as X-linked agammaglobulinemia, common variable immunodeficiency, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, and severe combined immunodeficiency. In some regions, it is also approved for chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) in adults.
Hizentra provides passive immunity by delivering concentrated IgG antibodies directly into the subcutaneous tissue, where they are absorbed into the bloodstream. This replaces deficient or missing antibodies, helping to protect against bacterial and viral infections by providing broad-spectrum pathogen recognition.
Hizentra is administered weekly by subcutaneous infusion, typically at home after proper training. Common adverse reactions include local injection site reactions, headache, fatigue, and nausea. As a plasma-derived product, there is a theoretical risk of infectious disease transmission. Patients should be monitored for signs of hypersensitivity reactions or thromboembolic events.
