Used for pupil dilation during eye examinations and diagnostic procedures, treatment of inflammatory eye conditions such as uveitis and keratitis, prevention of synechiae (adhesions) formation, and post-operative care following ocular surgery.
As a muscarinic antagonist, homatropine blocks acetylcholine receptors in the iris sphincter muscle (causing mydriasis) and the ciliary muscle (causing cycloplegia), resulting in pupil dilation and temporary inability to focus the eye.
Contraindicated in narrow-angle glaucoma; systemic absorption may cause anticholinergic side effects particularly in children and elderly patients. May cause temporary blurred vision and light sensitivity. Use with caution in patients with Down syndrome, spastic paralysis, or those wearing contact lenses.
