Humalog Mix is indicated for the treatment of adults and children with diabetes mellitus who require insulin for the maintenance of blood glucose control. It is typically prescribed when intermediate-acting insulin combined with mealtime rapid-acting insulin is appropriate.
Humalog Mix contains two components: insulin lispro (rapid-acting) begins working within 10-15 minutes to control blood sugar spikes after meals, while insulin lispro protamine (intermediate-acting) provides a more prolonged effect lasting up to 12-18 hours for basal glucose control. Together, they mimic the body's natural insulin response.
Humalog Mix should be administered subcutaneously within 15 minutes before or immediately after a meal. Patients should rotate injection sites and monitor blood glucose regularly. Hypoglycemia is the most common adverse effect. This medication should not be used during episodes of hypoglycemia or by patients with known hypersensitivity to insulin lispro.
