Hycodan is prescribed for the symptomatic treatment of cough associated with upper respiratory infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, and other respiratory conditions where cough suppression is medically necessary. It is not appropriate for coughs due to smoking or asthma in most cases.
The hydrocodone component acts on the brain's cough center to suppress the cough reflex. The homatropine (an anticholinergic) is added partly to discourage misuse and may provide modest drying of respiratory secretions. This combination helps reduce both the frequency and intensity of coughing.
Hycodan contains an opioid and carries risks of dependence, sedation, and respiratory depression. It should not be used in children under 6 years old, and extreme caution is needed in patients with respiratory conditions like asthma or COPD, or those taking other CNS depressants. Use only as specifically prescribed; do not increase dose or frequency without medical guidance.
