Adrenal insufficiency (primary and secondary), acute adrenal crisis, severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), status asthmaticus, septic shock with adrenal insufficiency, inflammatory conditions, and autoimmune disorders requiring rapid corticosteroid therapy.
As a synthetic glucocorticoid, it binds to glucocorticoid receptors, regulating gene transcription to reduce inflammation, suppress immune responses, decrease vascular permeability, and inhibit inflammatory mediator release. The sodium succinate formulation allows for rapid IV/IM administration.
Should be used with caution in patients with infections (immunosuppressive effects), diabetes (may increase blood glucose), hypertension, peptic ulcers, and osteoporosis. Abrupt discontinuation after prolonged use may cause adrenal insufficiency. Monitor electrolytes, blood glucose, and blood pressure during therapy.
