Hydroflumethiazide

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: August 24, 2026

Hydroflumethiazide is a thiazide diuretic used to treat hypertension and fluid retention (edema) associated with conditions such as heart failure, liver disease, and kidney disorders. It works by increasing the amount of salt and water expelled from the body through urine, which reduces blood volume and lowers blood pressure.

Quick summary

Hydroflumethiazide is a thiazide diuretic that removes excess fluid from the body to treat high blood pressure and edema.

Overdose information

Important overdose information
Toxic dose: Single dose that may cause serious toxicity - doses significantly above therapeutic range (12.5-50mg daily)
Chronic overdose: Prolonged use leading to severe electrolyte imbalances (hyponatremia, hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia) and dehydration
Immediate actions
Gastric lavage if within 1-2 hours of ingestion, activated charcoal, intravenous fluids, electrolyte replacement, cardiac monitoring
Antidote
No specific antidote - supportive care and electrolyte management(Supportive treatment is effective with early intervention; focus on correcting electrolyte imbalances and maintaining hydration)
Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222

Mechanism of action

Value:Inhibits sodium chloride reabsorption in distal tubules

Pharmacological action

Treats high blood pressure (hypertension) and fluid retention (edema) caused by conditions such as congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, kidney dysfunction, and corticosteroid or estrogen therapy.

As a thiazide diuretic, it inhibits sodium reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubules of the kidneys, promoting increased excretion of sodium, water, and electrolytes including potassium and magnesium.

May cause electrolyte imbalances (low potassium, sodium, magnesium), dehydration, and increased sensitivity to sunlight. Regular blood tests may be needed to monitor kidney function and electrolyte levels. Alcohol and other blood pressure medications may enhance its effects.
