Icatibant

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: July 26, 2026

Icatibant is a bradykinin B2 receptor antagonist used for the treatment of acute hereditary angioedema (HAE) attacks in adults with C1-esterase-inhibitor deficiency. By blocking bradykinin, it reduces the vascular permeability and swelling characteristic of HAE attacks.

Method of drug administration

Treatment of acute hereditary angioedema (HAE) attacks in adults and adolescents (≥12 years) with C1-esterase-inhibitor deficiency. It is used for attacks affecting the skin, face, abdomen, or larynx.

Icatibant is a selective competitive antagonist at the bradykinin B2 receptor. It blocks bradykinin from binding to its receptor, preventing the increase in vascular permeability and subsequent tissue swelling that occurs during HAE attacks.

Administered as a subcutaneous injection (typically 30 mg). May cause local injection site reactions (redness, swelling, burning). Should be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease. Not for use in children under 12 years. Patients should seek immediate medical attention for laryngeal attacks as this is a medical emergency.
